People of the Pecos School Programs

Living Off the Land

Grades: 4 – 7 (Max 30 Students)

Cost: $3 per student

What’s the difference between gathering and foraging? How does an atlatl make hunting more efficient? Hunt and Gather like the people of the Pecos did 4,000 years ago. Students will use spears, atlatls, tumplines and baskets to experience what it’s like to live off the land.

Painting the Pecos

Grades: 4 – 7 (Max 30 Students)

Cost: $3 per student

How did people make paint thousands of years ago? Examine the ancient techniques used by making your own paint. Students will then create a story about the land, sky, and water on our rock art wall, much as the people of the Pecos did 4,000 years ago.

Hands-On Archaeology with Dr. Dig

Grades: 4 – 7 (Max 30 Students)

How do we know what we know about the people of the Pecos? Archaeology! Explore our lifeways lab with Dr. Dig to learn how the people of the Pecos used and modified the environment to meet their everyday needs. Students will create cordage and discover how it was used, how we know what the Pecos people ate and how they made baskets, bags and sandals.

People of the Pecos Experience (Offered June 1 – Dec 31, 2017)

Grades: 4 – 7 (Max 30 Students)

Cost: $5 per student

Monday-Friday                            2 hrs.

Delve into experimental archaeology to explore the ancient techniques and materials and learn how the people of the lower Pecos region lived 4,000 years ago. Students will explore the survival and lifeways of hunter and gatherers in our galleries and lab spaces with demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Gathering at the Waters   
(Offered January 15 – June 2, 2018)

Grades: 4 – 7 (Max 35 Students)

Cost: $3 per student

Gather at the waters of the San Antonio River and its creekways to collect and trade resources. Students will discover how the environment impacted the ways people in this region have met their daily needs for thousands of years.
